Discover The Nature of Yucatan Beyond the Beaches and Cenotes

Written by Nest Seekers | Jun 8, 2026 3:32:03 PM

It is well known that one of the greatest advantages of living in Merida is its proximity to the beach, less than an hour away. Cenotes are also famous for being magical settings to cool off; however, there is an enormous natural universe to discover in Yucatan, among mangroves, lagoons, caves, and endemic fauna.

If you are thinking of visiting Merida or moving to this quiet city full of culture, you should know that just a few hours away, you will have access to impressive biodiversity. In this article, we present you with 4 places where you can explore the Yucatecan ecosystem.

El Corchito Ecological Reserve

El Corchito is located on the outskirts of Progreso and is an ecological reserve with outdoor “aguadas” surrounded by mangroves. To reach the aguadas, you must take a boat, and once there, you can swim, relax in the palapas, or greet the fauna, such as coatis or raccoons.

Las Coloradas

Unmistakable for its pink lagoons, Las Coloradas is in the fishing community of San Felipe, very close to Rio Lagartos. This area is the main salt-processing center in Yucatan, and, precisely, the high salt concentrations paint the spectacular lagoon pink. For the same reason, swimming here is not recommended!

Ria Celestun Biosphere Reserve

Between dunes and mangroves, there is the highest concentration of pink flamingos, which can be seen from November to March. Ria Celestun is perfect for birdwatching and discovering endemic fauna, including herons, frigates, pelicans, monkeys, spiders, turtles, and more. We recommend that you go with binoculars!

Grutas Chocantes

These caverns, which date back well over 65 million years, are one of Yucatan’s most extraordinary attractions, preserving marine fossils, stalactites, stalagmites, and calcium carbonate waterfalls. Located just outside Tekax in southern Yucatan, they can be explored through either a short or extended tour, with the latter being more physically demanding.
