One of the most emblematic spots in Merida, Yucatan, is Paseo de Montejo, a large avenue whose origins date back to the early 20th century. Nowadays, it is a mandatory tourist stop with a modern, varied selection of restaurants, cafés, and hotels, and it is the ideal place to try traditional snacks such as the marquesita and the champola.

However, it is still possible to admire the symbols of the Belle Époque through its impressive French-style houses. In this post, we present the historic house museums you can tour on your next visit to Paseo de Montejo.

Las Casas Gemelas

Also known as the Casas Camara or Montejo 495, these mansions belonged to a family of wealthy henequen landowners. Currently, the Casas Gemelas (Twin Houses) are uninhabited, but their interiors remain intact, with their original furniture. We recommend you visit them to experience an authentic trip to the past.

Quinta Montes Molina

This mansion, formerly known as Villa Beatriz, was built during the Porfiriato era by a prominent Cuban businessman. Nowadays, you can tour the house's interior, visit its gallery, and take a break at the book café. It also hosts large social events.

El Pinar

With its charming pink façade, El Pinar evokes the grandeur of European castles. Its interior features impressive antiques dating back to the 17th century, including Murano glass lamps, 19th-century porcelain jars, and majestic Italian marble finishes.

Palacio Canton

Unlike the historic house museums on this list, Palacio Canton is now the Regional Museum of Anthropology of Yucatan. Although it is not strictly a house museum, as you walk through the museum you will be delighted with its eclectic architecture, with influences from neoclassical, classical, and French baroque styles.
