The Jacarandas in Mexico

Jacarandas are lush trees native to Brazil that can reach up to 20 meters in height, and whose lilac-colored flowers paint the streets of the vibrant Mexico City during spring. This subtropical tree managed to adapt to the capital's environment, creating the most beautiful postcards during the months of March and April.

It is said that their arrival in the country was in the 19th century, thanks to the Japanese gardener Tatsugoro Matsumoto, who brought the first seeds from South America*. Years later, between 1920 and 1924, Tatsugoro and his son Sanshiro, with the authorization of President Álvaro Obregón, were responsible for planting these precious trees on the main streets of the city.

The Jacaranda, a Globally Recognized Symbol

It is said that Matsumoto did not originally plan to plant jacarandas in Mexico; he intended to plant Japanese cherry blossoms, however, the temperate climate of Mexico City was not suitable for their flowering.

Today, the jacaranda is a globally recognized symbol, adorning the most iconic sites of Mexico City, such as the Palace of Fine Arts, the Alameda Central, or the parks of the Condesa neighborhood. Its popularity is as great as that of cherry trees whose sakura flowers beautify the main cities of Japan in spring.
