What To Do in Merida in May? The Hottest Month in Yucatan

Written by Nest Seekers | Apr 27, 2026 7:07:02 PM

When talking about life in Merida, one detail that cannot be ignored is the weather in May. While Merida is a hot city for much of the year, May’s temperatures can soar to 35°C-40°C (95°F-104°F), creating discomfort even among lifelong locals.

Despite extreme temperatures, there are a couple of ways you can adjust your routine and your home to cope with the heat. Keep reading to learn about them.

Plans to Escape Merida’s Hot Weather

Remember that once you live in Merida, you will be very close to the beach. An infallible plan is to visit a beach club on the Yucatecan coast, such as Progreso, San Bruno, Chicxulub, or Sisal. Cenotes are also a very refreshing alternative, and there are many you can swim or dive in just a few hours from Merida, like the Lol-Ha or X'Batun cenote.

If you prefer a more casual plan, high-end shopping malls such as La Isla, The Harbor, or Galerias are excellent shelters for hot afternoons. And as a local tip, during this season we recommend making plans “until the sun goes down” (something Yucatecans say a lot).

Plan your outings and outdoor workouts for after 6 p.m., when the sun begins to set. You and your friends will appreciate it!

Tips for Creating a Refreshing Home

Now, if you are just about to move to Merida and have the opportunity to build a home from scratch, consider these tips:

  • Create airflow paths so the cool morning breeze can flow into the house.
  • Choose light-colored walls or natural finishes such as chukum.
  • Install fans and mini-splits in strategic areas of the home.
  • Invest in indoor plants to help absorb heat.
  • Choose cotton bedding or, even better, install a few hammocks at home! A very Yucatecan tradition for relaxing and staying cool.
